The SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) system is the older of the two. NAICS (North American Industrial Classification System) replaced it over two decades ago, but SIC codes remain important for tracking historic data.
So how do you find these codes? Search tools are available online:
- OSHA lets you search the 1987 SIC Manual.
- The Census provides searchable online NAICS manuals from 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012 on its North American Industry Classification System page.
- There's also an SIC to NAICS converter from the NAICS association.
To search Business Source Premier using a code, choose Advanced Search, and then from the Select a Field dropdown list pick "IC NAICS Code or Description."
