Industry Classification Codes

EBSCOHost, Business Source Premier, Select a Field
Industry classification codes can lead you to statistics about an industry, lists of companies within an industry, and journal and news articles about an industry. There are two major classification systems used in North America: SIC and NAICS.

The SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) system is the older of the two. NAICS (North American Industrial Classification System) replaced it over two decades ago, but SIC codes remain important for tracking historic data.

So how do you find these codes? Search tools are available online:
  • OSHA lets you search the 1987 SIC Manual.
  • The Census provides searchable online NAICS manuals from 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012 on its North American Industry Classification System page.
  • There's also an SIC to NAICS converter from the NAICS association.
Once you've identified a code, it can be used to find data about the industry in the Economic Census and other government collections. You can also use it as a search term in a database like Business Source Premier, which is available to students, faculty, and staff at CBU, along with other business resources through the Library's website.

To search Business Source Premier using a code, choose Advanced Search, and then from the Select a Field dropdown list pick "IC NAICS Code or Description."
