Tax History Project

The Tax History Project is a free web resource covering the history of taxation in the United States. It's provided as a public service by Tax Analysts, a non-profit organization. The project began in 1995 with the intent to provide scholars, citizens, policymakers, students, and the media with information on taxation and taxes.

Among the resources provided at the website are the Tax History Museum, Presidential Tax Returns, the 1040 Archive, an image gallery, selections from the Federalist Papers, and more. Tax returns are available from presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt through Barack Obama and vice presidents Dick Cheney and Joe Biden. There are also returns for the Republican candidates for president and vice president from 2008 and 2012. Historic scans of the 1040 form date back to 1913, and a variety of cartoons and posters make up the image gallery.
