Documenting the American South

Oral histories, letters, autobiographies, maps, photos, postcards--all of these are part of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill's website, "Documenting the American South."

There are sixteen collections of digitized primary source material at the site, each arranged around a theme related to southern history or culture. Among the collections are: the Church in Southern Black Community, Driving through Time: the Digital Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, First-Person Narratives of the American South, Library of Southern Literature, North American Slave Narratives, Oral Histories of the American South, and more. Emphasis is placed on the history of the Carolinas. You can browse the individual collections or search the entire site.

A link to the site can be found on our Research by Subject Guide to American History.
